WASHINGTON - The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday rejected several drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, including Viagra.
It recommended that people who take prescription Viagra or other sildenafil should avoid taking it, the agency said in a statement.
Viagra was first approved by the FDA in 1998, but in May it was approved for use in adults, according to FDA officials.
Viagra is available as a generic version of Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra, which treats erectile dysfunction.
The FDA also has approved a version of Cialis, another sildenafil drug, in the United States.
The FDA rejected the drug because it failed to show that it caused erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said that it does not have enough data to recommend that patients take Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. But it said that patients with underlying health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure are not recommended the drug.
The FDA said that doctors can order medications that do not cause erections and other medications should not be taken for several months after starting the drug.
In March, the FDA approved Viagra for use in adults and children and for use in adults and children over 65.
The agency also approved a generic version of the drug, known as Revatio, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
A second approved version of the drug, made by Pfizer Inc., is known as Cialis, which works by relaxing the blood vessels.
The FDA said that a second version of the drug was not expected to have a greater risk of causing erectile dysfunction than the older medication. However, it recommended that the agency consider other options such as a low-dose daily low-pressure regimen that does not increase the risk of side effects.
The agency also said that the agency will be conducting additional studies to determine if the drugs are safe and effective in treating erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said it is reviewing the decision and will make any recommendations it makes.
